On Saturday evening, April 22, 2017 at the small Corfu Beer brewery in Arillas, the organisation team of the festival are gathered together with the permanent Czech residents of Corfu.
Spyros Kaloudis, the owner of the Corfu Beer brewery and the soul of the whole project, informed us about the three beer festivals, that took place in the past four years.
In 2013 at the festival "Corfu meets Bavaria", Corfu came together with brewers from Bavaria. In 2104 at “Corfu meets UK” producers and beer lovers from England, Ireland and Scotland visited Arillas, and at least in 2016 Italian brewers were hosted at “Corfu meets Italy".
The Festival “Corfu meets...” has more than one goal: Producing, comparing and enjoying different types of beer with special recipes and know-how does of course give priority to the event. But the main concern is also the opportunity to meet different cultures and people who share their ideas, experiences and products. It is a festival with local gastronomy, singing, dancing and having fun.
The five-day event has free entrance and since the first year, when more than 5.000 people came to visit it, its participation is growing every year. Last year the festival was visited by 15,000 people. More than 200 volunteers offered their help and around 350 dancers and 250 musicians were involved in the festivals entertainment program. 20 local producers had the opportunity to present and sell their products in an exhibition. Several education events were also held, such as the conference on Mediterranean diet and gastronomy.
At the end of the last year's festival, Giannis Papadopoulos, who was born in the Czech Republic and has been living for many years with his wife Tania in Arillas, has now been handed the baton. Both are medical doctors but they are also pioneers not only in the field of medicine - symbolically and in the true sense of the word they are finding new ways... by organizing walks after cleaning the old food paths in the Arillas area, so that visitors can enjoy the beautiful nature and after that relax with a glass of Corfu beer.
Valuable support in organizing the festival has been offered by Hanna and Giannis Anthis, owners of a travel agency, who gave the event "Wings" by organizing the travel facilities from the Czech Republic to Corfu. They both are beer connoisseurs and lovers and have arranged the participation of four well known Czech microbreweries with a long tradition. They have also invited a famous music-dancing folk group with more than 30 members for the festivals culture program.
At the meeting on April 22, about 50 people participated. Several Czechs could not come because they were outside the island. But perhaps a lot of people still have no idea about the festival!
We want to invite all Czechs and Slovaks, not only from Corfu, but also from Athens, Thessaloniki and other parts of Greece, to take part and represent their land in Corfu ... and - of course - to enjoy the Corfiot and Czech Beer!!!.
